(unless you have a set up like spuds) I'm not sure of the difference between dirt and soil.
Anyway - the weeds got away from me this year. With all that was going on in the spring I just didn't have enough prep time, but the real problem is that our dirt has weed seed in it. So today, I started cooking dirt for my window sill projects and for next year.
I'm using my electric roasting pan - because the electric is free and abundant on these sunny days - it doesn't do much at a time, but it's a start, and I had the pan, and only used it twice last year - so if I can't clean it after this no great loss.
Come winter, when the electric isn't as abundant we will switch to a steam sterilizer - we have that stuff here also, but didn't want to pay for gas if I didn't have to.
