Wow,we both passed General today. That opens up all the bands to us.I also took the Extra exam, got 22 out of 50 but why not,its free, you can take all three exams per session if you want and still a flat 15 dollars. We passed Technician on 12/18/14. . Sooooo, maybe by the 15th of Jan I'll be ready for extra? All that does is open the ends of the bands to us,but why not? General, however,is adequate for sure.

Made contacts on both repeaters.Hit a guy 50 miles away,scratchy,35 miles pretty darn good, could understand him,and the close repeater was downright clear.VERY COOL with a 35 dollar handheld and a 17 dollar antenna!

So total costs for HAM hobby.... 23 inch Tram 1185 magnet mount antenna for car.....27.88 Cable adapter from radio to Tram..16.31 BaoFeng UV5R,two radios....63.58 Battery adapter to plug radio into car power...11.88 ExpertPower 7.76 inch antennas for UV5R,two,...11.93 Radio/computer programming cable...7.38
Test for technician license for two people...30 dollars Test for General Class license for two people...30 dollars ====================================== So we became HAMS for an initial outlay of 200 dollars. Now we will play with it and see where we want to go.
The current hand held 5 watt radios only do the technician class bands of 70cm and 2 meter. Its actually possible to hit repeaters and go world wide with them, plus hybrid radio/computer links that do that too.
The General glass does all the World wide bands but will need better home station and antenna but CAN be done for about 400 dollars with new equipment.
Costs have really dropped.
LOTS to learn before we take that step, including do we want to or even need to,will we like the hobby or not.Etc.

Mrs just hit me via repeater from 1/2 way to work on 5 watts with the HT and 7.75 inch antenna,me at house with a 26 inch or so mobile ant.Pretty amazing for 5 watt radios, clear voice with background static.
Waiting for her to hit town and see if we can make it all the way, will have to work on better antennae for home and one each for vehicles.
