Mrs working in the garden, brussels sprouts making babies, going to do more of those next year
Neighbor had 4 six month old ducks needing homes. The white are female Pekin, heavy fat things,if they didnt lay an egg a day would eat em! Did you know ducks are ready to eat at 42 days!! 2.5 lbs feed per pound of duck weight.
The males are Rouens,we named em Rowan and Martin.
Girl very excited to have new charges, she really feels like she has a job, watching over em,all smiles.
Snooky not so sure we really need more ducks. Now 5 ducks,5 chickens
One of my friends chickens have started laying again too. Guess it was too cold for a while to think about laying an egg. Is it true that they almost totally stop laying after 2 or 3 years?
Very true.Ducks on the other hand can lay for years, right now 2of 3 laying daily again.
1 chicken laid a couple eggs last week, but very sporadic from them any more. And cared for birds can last 12 years,so going to be feeding them for years to come.Cant kill em,I handle them twice a day and they trust me and love us,so we got pets.Hmmmmm....Mr farmer should not be having chickens here. Now if I didnt handle, and killed each year, might be different, now it would be like killing the dogs, cant do it.
It really is something when Girl walks among her birds, slowly, stops, looks around, birds trust her too.Girl is real passive, doesnt look for trouble,no domineering at all.So friend visited and she took a lot of grief from his dog, just took it.Right until he made a threatening look at her chickens, then she went after him big time. That is one good dog she is.(Coulda kicked his behind any time she wanted,LOL!)
Snookie doesnt mess with birds, puts her head down and tucks tail around them. When she was first meeting birds Mrs hears some trouble,Snookie runs up to her with a big smile and a couple feathers sticking out of her mouth, didnt hurt any though but would have,She got a big scolding and now essentially has no use for them. Also wouldnt have put up with Buds' dogs bullying for a second, wish she had been around then.He thought it was cool, natures way, etc, would have thought different if it was his dog getting pushed around for sure.

Rather interesting regarding bird feed.
We all KNOW we have to have "HIGH PROTEIN" food for them to lay.
Surprisingly, the birds have been eating veggie trimmings, pulp, and boiled veg from broth. And low and behold, they are laying.OK,Duck might miss a day here and there, but even Tina the chicken, old as she is is laying 4 a week, and a bubblehead laid one the other day.
Sooooo....been spending on my veggies, but Ive completely stopped the bird feed. And that stuff isnt cheep (get it,cheep?)
I think we are being sold a bill of goods on commercial feed, seems to me it isnt anything but the bare minimum to keep em going.
Interesting, the birds spend their entire days eating, works for me,they dont need to slam down pellets and laze around all day.
