Poking around the web, a mouse click here, a roll of the wheel there...then I had to sneeze. No warning, it just happened. The mouse wound up being launched into thin air and collided with the wall. Many fiddly bits of plastic later I realized that it was toast. By the way-what the devil is inside a mouse ball? Lead? Enriched plutonium? Those things are heavy! So....digging around in the box of 'stuff' I found I only had an old two button compaq mouse-no center wheel. Well, in times of trouble...Whoa. Wait a minute. What is this? Things respond a LOT quicker with this mouse. And it is extremely quiet in use. I can certainly live without a wheel...but I wonder. Why does this old thing work so much better??
On a similar note, if you stretch a bit, I have a technical question. Phone wire. If I tin the end of stranded 2 conductor wire-like lamp cord-why can I not use that to run as phone line inside the house? Does the phone company have some sort of wire police or something? As long as it is insulated and the connections shielded what difference would it make? I have about 300 feet of two conductor-I have about 7 feet of "real" phone line. Now you know why I am asking this! Thanks folks.
Hmmmm....hadn't considered liberating juice from the phone company! Naw....wouldn't work. They probably have their own SWAT team or something!
Yeah, they can read voltage drop pretty accurately,BIL is a line man.
I saw this on voltage....
When the telephone is NOT in use (on hook) the voltage across the two wires (tip and ring) is about 48 volts D.C.
When the telephone IS in use (off hook) the voltage across the tip and ring wires drops to about 6 volts D.C.
When a ringing signal is being sent there is an A.C. voltage "superimposed" on top of the normal D.C. voltage. This "ringing voltage" is nominally about 90 volts at 20 Hertz (cycles) but could be as high as 130 volts and at different frequencies.
Thanks for the information Spuds. That bit about "superimposing" AC voltage is curious, but it obviously works. I am going to try a length of that wire and see if there is any noticebale difference regarding phone quality, and of course, dial up behavior.
