This is my Old VW Transporter truck.Has about 100,000 miles, its a 1959. Can carry 1 TON,amazing.Gets 25 miles per gallon and can haul a ton up the mountain at 25 MPH.
Top speed at 60,55 is better.Has a very comfortable ride.
The sides of the bed fold down and turns it into a flatbed. Also has underbed storage compartment.
Its Mrs's truck actually...she laid claim to it and it likes her.
We bought from an Old man, second owner, who was going blind. He APPROVED us as owners because he didnt want it either sold for a profit,or modified from original.I think we paid about 6000? something like that in 2000.
I like that truck! I would have claimed it too. I like the truck parking sign too. How does it do in snow?
Very good.If it sat a little higher like the Baja Bug not much would stop it.Up here,in winter, all the VW beetles come out of hibernation and the roads are packed with them.Put on chains and very little except high packed snow can stop em.

Wound up total cost of 2500 bucks with new tires, that was 1000 for tires to proof front end straight and not a tire issue but its set for a good long time.
Tranny slips sorta, revs to 1500-2000 rpms and truck slowly moves away, gaining speed but rpms stay same.Turns out this is how it is in 1 and 2nd gear, its normal! Nobody likes it,and there are fixes, but its how it is,so tranny is GOOD!
Im really REALLY liking this truck,we think maybe when Jetta is dead getting a regular cab stick instead of something else.Lots of reports guys getting 500,000 miles average out of the Cummins Diesel with oil changes, and 750,000 reports and fleet reports of 1 MILLION miles from this motor, amazing!!!!!!!This is the 1997 and earlier motors.98 started with all the electronics being added, and reliability started to plunge, still good for modern motors but nothing like the older motors

So,it wasnt quite right so took it back in for adjusting, gave it a month to make sure it didnt just need to wear in...When it wanted to bring the rear around the front in the rain it was time to get it dialed in correctly.
That's more like it! It was right front bottom control arm was adjusted too far out.
Luckily in all my reading I found a sheet about HOW to adjust em correctly by a Dodge Tech at Geno's Garage, great site BTW.
So I printed it out, showed him yesterday where it was wrong and sure enough, that was the problem. No more understeer/oversteer squiggly in corners, tracks the corners smoothly. That also fixed the straight ahead tracking problem, and even the wheel being adverse to returning to center, now it returns, tho not completely, needs a tinkle assist at end, all the way that being just a NICE TIGHT front end,its SWEET!
The clunk? Right front shock lost top nut, just a 'it happens' thing, not something either of us touched,so he added a nut,no clunk.
NOW THAT'S THE 200,000 mile front end I paid for,its a different truck!

Took the Dodge (The BEAST) to the quarter carwash to find engine oil leak.Get home, its leaking at the top of oil filter. It was finger loose for 3/4 turn! Gripped it on snugly.
Cool thats all it was,not so cool, can you imagine the oil filter spinning off??
Has a K&N air filter, bought the cleaner kit and its on the front porch drying. Not so sure about it,have heard both good and bad.But it was VERY dirty for sure!
I LIKE having clean motors,it looks very nice.
Ordered 3 Fleetguard oil filter,25 dollars delivered. Its what Cummins says to get and can be hard to find,so got that taken care of,I can change my oil now, want to do it a lot,all it takes to keep these engines happy they say.

So now that I put in the new alternator last month or so,today was new starter day. Thing was a bear and a half as front diff blocks off access pretty good, and uses goofy 12 point 10 mm bolts, how weird is that???
So took me 2 hours, coulda been worse.NEW starter at Napa,214 dollars, with tax and AAA discount 217 out the door.
Its nice, really spins the motor probably twice as fast, nice!Truck wouldnt start last friday, had to go to workto rescue Mrs and bang on starter to get it to go.
I bought my Ram 3500 dually diesel new in 01. 330,000 miles later it's still great. What a workhorse. 1 clutch, 1 pair of batteries, 1 transfer pump, 1 starter and alternator, 4 sets of brakes and 33 oil changes in That time.
I changed all fluids when brand new to full synthetic Mobil 1 Delvac. When the top end was opened for adjustment at about 140k, the mechanic said it looked brand new.

Nice truck Mark.
Crazy motor isnt it,they will go a long way to make one better. And with the manual trans thats really a long life set up.When my auto goes Im going to really upgrade my torque converter to one with a lot less slip.It has a billet now,but he got one that still slips waaaaay too much until 3rd and 4th reaches lock up.Pretty much cant find one with a manual for sale used, nobody will let one go!Then again, with wife willing to drive in ice and snow auto really makes it a lot easier for her to get moving. So that was a married trade off,I'll live with it.Its OK.
That and not so great brakes are my only complaints, and rest of truck makes up for that in spades, with after market they can really be a super vehicle in any configuration you can dream up.I do love that truck.
Lights went out on Dodge Truck, will go tomorrow to junk yard and get a switch.
Today Im doing the re-wire research, use the switch only to set off a relay, getting juice directly for lights from battery and not have all that amperage running thru light switch,a weak area on this truck.
And since the headlights are fogged over going to order new lights as well, a couple hundred bucks but this set I will keep polished with a UV blocking polish, then they wont yellow out.Did it on car and 10 years later the plastic is as clear as new.

Got the lights in,from this to these.About 300 for the lights and wiring harness, from 2 bulbs to 4,from the power running thru light switch to bulbs, now the switch only runs a separate relay from the battery to each bulb individually.
Post by mightyspuds on Feb 13, 2011 15:16:29 GMT -8
Those old headlights are a single 9004 bulb, now it has a 9004 and a more powerful 9007 in addition to the 9004 which both light in dim or bright mode, then the turn signal/parking light is just a regular old 1157 style bulb,no changes there on the lighting.
The new harness plugs into the old 9004 socket and has pigtails coming out for both the new bulbs, each with its own relay. Then positive power is pulled directly from the pos side of left and right battery, thru an individual relay to each bulb ,each side having its own harness. So its actually 2 separate harnesses.2 separate systems.Neg of light is just a ground to the frame by battery.
All you do is plug in the harness to old light plug, plug in the new bulbs and connect a hot wire to batt and neg to ground. All fuses and relays are already hooked up in the harness.

Idiot pulled in front of Mrs.No license,no insurance and 'a registration problem'
He walks from all responsibility,IF the info he gave was real,no ID,gotta love it,then he gets out and is mouthing off to MRS!!!!,Fortunately cops were there almost instantly.Total ahole, just LIKE the trash who hit my house, drunk stoned out trash and walked away COMPLETELY!
Mrs OK,truck needs axle,upper/lower control arm, steering box, pitman arm and right front fender and lights.
No comprehensive, uninsured motorist insurance only covers personal injury from what I read, insurance office closed.
Looks like its all out of my wallet.
Just like the drunk ahole who hit my house,he walked scot free too.
Gotta love it.
This is a replay of accident,Mrs would've be white car going south, brown car about to be hit would be truck that ran in front of her, only crossing from driveway to go north. That is the exact point of impact...I ALMOST got an accident caught right on the spot, amazing what idiots people are!!!!!
What control arms should look like, what they do now
Broken pitman arm with steering box shaft in it,stabilzer shock...
Might not have been so bad but bottom of spring is mashed about 1 inch into axle bracket that welded to axle, probably bent axle too,but for sure bracket is done for, hence so is axle.DAMN!!!!!!!!!
Some friday the 13th,eh?Thank goodness Mrs was in truck and not hurt, she was going 45 when she hit brakes,he never saw her.My front tire smaered off the front edge of his truck,he started to flee but came back, wish he had fled, then they COULD have arrested his trash ass. Several witnesses stopped and said nothing mrs could do,he just pulled in front of her.Wish she had hit a foot back and beat the hell out of HIS frame.
He gets 300 tow charge,150 accident report/response charge from police, and 50 a day impound fee's times 30 days, hope he loses his truck, sure robbed ME blind!
